
The National Police and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine have charged 35-year-old Russian paramedic Ilya Sorokin, nicknamed ‘Doctor Evil,’ with cruel treatment of prisoners of war.
Circumstances of the case
Sorokin had been working as a medical worker at Penal Colony No. 10 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Republic of Mordovia since 2018. According to the investigation, he systematically committed acts of violence against Ukrainian prisoners of war held at this facility.
The methods of torture included beating with electric shockers until unconsciousness or temporary paralysis of individual parts of the body, as well as striking the prisoners’ heads and bodies with pipes and other objects. At the same time, the wounded Ukrainian soldiers did not receive any painkillers or wound dressings from the medic.
Legal consequences
Sorokin has been notified in absentia of his status as a suspect under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which classifies cruel treatment of prisoners as a war crime. The penalty under this article is imprisonment for a term of 8 to 12 years.
The suspect is currently in the Russian Federation. Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are continuing to work on his arrest and prosecution.
Biographical information
According to information from the journalistic project ‘Schemes’, Ilya Sorokin was born and lives in the Mordovian village of Potma. He is married and has two daughters. At the end of 2023, he joined the military, taking the call sign ‘Doctor.’ He is currently believed to be serving in the logistical support forces of the Russian Armed Forces.
