Modern prison systems are characterised by the increasing role of violent criminal subcultures in prisons, which is a key challenge for most prison systems. Under these conditions, the traditional classical goals of criminal punishment are increasingly becoming a fiction.
Therefore, in this chapter, we aim to analyse the phenomenon of street and prison gangs as a special form of criminal organisations in the penitentiary systems of the United States of America, which, in addition, operate outside penitentiary institutions.
Street and prison gangs are not only part of the American criminological and penological landscape. They are a significant part of social, economic, cultural and musical life and, in addition, a more than important element of American political discourse.
