On November 13, 2024, Donald Trump has announced that Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, 42, will serve as his Attorney General, a role that doubles as the country’s top prosecutor and the head of the Department of Justice. Trump announced the nomination in a post on his Truth Social platform, citing Gaetz’s background as a lawyer and as a member of the House Judiciary Committee.

Matt Gaetz has suggested El Salvador’s brutal law enforcement is a good model for the American prison system.

In Julz 2024, Gaetz – who will oversee the Federal Bureau of Prisons if he becomes attorney general – visited El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), where gang leaders and murderers are locked up and from which they are never released.

The prison is a concrete manifestation of the hardline rule of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who is often berated by human rights groups for flouting norms but largely credited inside his country for returning safety to the streets.

«There’s a lot more discipline in this prison than we see in a lot of the prisons in the United States», said Gaetz, a congressman, now announced as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for the US Attorney General.
