A prison riot at the Artik Correctional Facility in the town of Artik in Shirak Province, sparked by the seizure of contraband and anti-gang measures, has been resolved, authorities reported on October 25, 2025.
The penitentiary service said in a statement that “efforts to combat criminal subculture, prevent the circulation of prohibited items, remove unauthorized objects from cells, and confiscate appliances that do not meet established standards, along with other lawful measures, have caused discontent among inmates, often accompanied by unlawful demands”.
The prison riot took place on October 24, when prisoners “disrupted the normal functioning of the facility, displayed insubordination, showed disrespectful behavior, and exhibited overtly aggressive conduct, including the use of physical force against officers”.
The situation has since normalized, according to the penitentiary service.
“As a result of explanatory and preventive measures, the situation has been brought under control. Currently, the situation at the Artik Penitentiary Institution is stable and fully monitored. At the same time, it should be noted that such acts of disobedience are illegal and give rise to grounds for criminal liability as established by law”, the service added.
No injuries were reported.
