Yuriy Tarasovych Verbytsky (25 August 1963, Lviv – 21 or 22 January 2014, near the village of Gnedin, Boryspil district, Kyiv region) – Hero of Ukraine (2014, posthumously), seismologist, Ph. Gnedin, Boryspil district, Kyiv region) – Hero of Ukraine (2014, posthumously), seismologist, PhD.

Known as an Euromaidan activist who was kidnapped by unknown persons on 21 January 2014, died of hypothermia, having lost consciousness after torture.

He was born on 25 August 1963 in the family of a geophysicist.

In 1985, he graduated from the National University ‘Lviv Polytechnic’. Since 1994, he worked in the Department of Seismology of the Carpathian region at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences in Ukraine, Lviv.

He was fond of mountaineering, had the first category of mountaineering, overcame routes of the highest category of complexity in the Caucasus.

Yuriy Verbytskyy was kidnapped on 21 January 2014 directly from the premises of a hospital in Kyiv. The kidnappers were ten people.

It is believed that the kidnappers were hired by the Party of Regions to sow disorder in the capital for the Euromaidan period, and that the kidnappers deliberately sought out injured Euromaidan participants in Kyiv hospitals to brutally kill them.

On 22 January 2014, the body of Yuriy Verbytskyy was found near the village of Hnedyn, Boryspil district, Kyiv region, with traces of torture.
