Prisoners being used as drug guinea pigs by gang bosses in Irish jail as lags ‘have no idea’ what’s in smuggled batches
Gang bosses at Mountjoy have been getting other inmates to try out new drugs smuggled into prison before trying it themselves.
Mountjoy wardens say they are now dealing with on average at least one drug overdose a day.
They are taking mostly opioids, nitazene or some form of tablets dressed up as sleeping pills.
The jailers are worried that the number of drug-related deaths will increase going forward and especially if the overcrowding issue continues.
One source said: “On the day one prisoner died from an overdose here a few weeks ago we had two others rushed to hospital also because of drugs”.
“They ended up fighting for their lives but thankfully survived”.
“Prisoners have no idea what they are taking most of the time and will take anything that is smuggled in.
“The situation is so bad that most of the gang bosses here will get other prisoners down the food chain to try a new batch of drugs before they will take it.”
“These inmates are effectively being used as human guinea pigs and there is little we can do to stop it. These fellas are willing to test it to impress their gang leaders.”
The Prison authorities have tried to crack down on the amount of drugs being smuggled into Mountjoy.
This involved the installation of new high tech X-ray machinery to scan all visitors in case they had drugs hidden on their bodies.
They are also carrying out more regular searches of the prison estate much to the annoyance of inmates.
The biggest battle the authorities have are drones which the gangs regularly use to drop drugs into the jail.
